Laura Hartwick-Super Great Beginning Agility Instructor!
Maybe or maybe not. Like, if you are on the World Team, you
are not taking my class. But I do try to make sure that my
classes are an equal balance of fun and teaching all the skills
that handlers and dogs need to have a good foundation. I shout
a lot about consistency and rewarding. I love teaching beginners.
I am a hobby agility instructor, and only teach on Wednesday
nights for Monterey
Bay Dog Training Club in Watsonville.
Jim Basic-Agility Trainer, Power
Paws
Jim is an amazing teacher. I take private lessons with him
whenever I can. He's in San Jose, also his wife is Nancy Gyes
who is legendary, but usually take classes with Jim. I wish
I could do more but the drive to San Jose is hard to fit in
except for my my monthly (in good weather!) lesson.
Rob Michalski-Agility Trainer, Monterey
Bay Dog Training Club Agility Classes
There was an article in Clean Run about Rob that called him
Agility's Mr. Nice Guy. Rob is quiet-but he has lots of information
and is an amazing trainer. He even lets me run with his dog!
He also teaches at his house in Salinas, but he teaches in
Watsonville for Monterey
Bay Dog Training Club on Wednesday nights, along with
Dee Hutton and myself.
Dee Hutton-Agility Trainer, D-Dog
Agility
The Central Coast's best kept secret. Dee does a great job,
especially with foundation level students. She has a field
in Watsonville, and a very low key style. Awesome help with
starters-if you want super contacts, take class with Dee!
Kathleen Alles-Agility Trainer, Heart
Dog Agility
Kathleen built an amazing agility facility in her own backyard
in Ben Lomond. I am so lucky to be able to practice here every
week! Kathleen also teaches lessons in the evenings, and is
a top competitor in these parts!
Anne Kajava-Agility Trainer, Java
Dog Training
Anne teaches at her facility in Fremont, right off the freeway
near a brew pub! Anne is a top competitor around here and
a scrupulous follower of Greg Derrett system.
CLUBS
Bayteam
Agility Club,
The Bay Area force to be reckoned with. The most organized
club, puts on huge trials perfectly. I am a member but not
very active. I help at trials to give my support. Agility
as we know it around here would not exist without the Bay
Team.
SMART-Salinas
Monterey Agility Racing Team
Central Coast's version of the Bay Team. A lot smaller, but
still manages to put on some great USDAA trials locally. I
help out as much as I can wtih graphic design for them.
RESOURCES
Agility
Calendar for California
What would we do without this! Everything is on it. Plan your
schedule for the next 6 months.
USDAA
USDAA is the serious agility. I wish I was a USDAA star but
I need to practice a lot more. These are some serious competitors.
We are lucky to have some great USDAA trials within 2 hours
of driving distance from Santa Cruz (sort of my boundary since
I usually can only make the Sunday of a trial and have to
drive there and back in one day)
CPE
An easier venue which is a little more low key and relaxed
than USDAA. We also have quite a few of these trials within
my 2 hour range. It's very easy to Q in CPE and perfect for
starting dogs out-Level 1 doesn't have a teeter or weave poles.
Lots of games where you just run around and get points can
build confidence in new handlers. But at the higher level,
the courses can be similiar to USDAA runs, depending on the
judge.
ASCA
I don't know lots about ASCA, except that it's not just for
Aussies anymore. I know a lot of Aussies love to go to ASCA
trials though. There are quite a few in our area.
